The video below makes some important points that I feel are very relevant to the Occupy Movement. I’d appreciate it if people would watch the video and then discuss what they thought. Any input or suggestions would be welcomed. Some topics are: What is our over-all message? Is our message clear? Should we appoint representatives? What do you think about appointing a Spokesperson for Occupy? Do you feel that Occupy is working?

A worthy analysis with fair points. I’ve been advocating a synthesis of the direct democracy process and a top down structure of some point, but I am have unable to arrive at a fair middle ground.

The issue bears more analysis. The current model does need retooling. I am unsure how this is done.

What is being done is that notable intellectuals and academics are being lifted to the forefront — Chris Hedges, David Harvey, Naomi Klein, etc, will fill these roles if someone else doesn’t.

I haven’t been to a GA meeting yet, but if other members think it needs improvement, then a maybe ovious solution would be a Representative Democracy. The Reps would discuss amongst one another untill they came to a conclusion that satisfies all parties, rather than just voting on issues. Some may say this would be elitism or it could be corrupt like U.S. government, but I disagree. U.S. Reps get paid, get power and are bribed by the rich. This wouldn’t be an issue for us, as our Reps would be volunteers. Also, U.S. politicians are usually rich, elitists who were groomed to be in government and don’t really care about the people. Our Reps would be men and women who we know are dedicated to the cause of economic justice. People who marched with us and worked hard to make this chapter a reality. That is why I believe selecting Reps from within the movement would be safe and not lead to corruption or consolidation of power.

I also believe that Occupy could benefit from a spokesman. A person who could communicate with the other chapters and organize more united protests. This would make things easier, as the other chapters would know who specifically to call and who to listen to. Of course, the decisions will still be made by the group, the spokesman will simply reflect and communicate the group’s decisions.
